Vermont Assistive Technology Program

VATP iPad Speech Generating Device Rental Program

The VT Assistive Technology Program (VATP) is now providing rentals of iPads to Speech and Language Pathologists (SLP) for the purpose of conducting Augmentative and Alternative Communication device trials. VATP manages a fleet of rental iPad 3’s which are set up as Speech Generating Devices. These come standard with a selection of current AAC applications as well as external speaker cases. Additional apps and peripherals may be requested at the time of rental. Using the link below please find the list of standard apps available on the devices under Durable Medical Equipment - IPAD/IPOD Rental Procedure.

Medicaid is now funding iOS tools (iPods/iPads/iPad minis), as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. At this time VATP only has iPad 3’s for rentals. In order for Medicaid to fund an iOS tool as a communication device, the prescription must come from an SLP who is a Medicaid provider. If the prescribing SLP (who is a Medicaid provider), requests an iPad rental from VATP for the purpose of running a device trial, the rental cost will be covered by Medicaid.

iPads may be rented by SLPs who are not Medicaid providers for the purpose of conducting device trials with patients. In this case, rentals must be covered by a funding source other than Medicaid. The rentals are billable at $100.00 per month.
